KAJANG 19 March - Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun has pledged to increase efforts in fostering the relationship between the community and police should she be given the mandate to be an assemblyman for the constituency.

"I've spoken briefly with the police who say that their relationship with the community here has been good thus far.

"As a former Petaling Jaya MP, I practised the three 3s in combating crime; enforcement, engineering and creating education or awareness among the community, which I'll be using here," the MCA vice-president told the press outside the voting perimeters at the district police headquarters here.

When asked to comment on Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's statement that she would make a better assemblyman as she will be here full time as opposed to her opponent Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail with the latter's personal commitment to her family and as a party leader, Chew said: "I have spoken on this issue before ( speaking about the other candidate).

"I don't wish to comment on it because I'm also contesting here, so let us compete in a healthy and gentlemanly manner," she said.

Khairy had reportedly said last night that given Wan Azizah's status as both "a grandmother and mother, we believe that she'll have less time to devote to the constituents whereas Chew had stated earlier that she'll be based here."

Wan Azizah arrived at 9.20am escorted by her campaigners, she shook hands with the police officers present before entering the polling station. She declined to comment when approached.

Earlier, some 50 police officers started lining up as early as 7.15am at the polling centre located at the district police headquarters here.

Three polling centres will be open today from 8am to 5pm to allow soldiers, policemen and their spouses to cast their votes.

The centres are at the Dewan Sultan Ahmad Shah in the Royal Malaysian Police College here, Dewan Anjung at the Royal Malaysian Forensic Laboratory in Taman Kota Cheras and the Kajang district police headquarters in Taman Kajang district.

According to the Election Commission, there are 1,197 voters in the list of early voters.

The Kajang constituency has a total of 39,278 voters of which Malays make up 48%, Chinese 41% and Indians 10%.
